Fistula In Ano

A fistula in ano is an abnormal tunnel-like connection that forms between the anal canal or rectum and the skin near the anus. It may develop as a complication of a perianal abscess.

Causes :

  • Incomplete healing of a perianal abscess.
  • Crohn's disease or certain infections may contribute to the development of fistulas.

Symptoms :

  • Persistent or recurrent pus discharge.
  • Pain and swelling.
  • Itching and discomfort.

Diagnosis :

  • Clinical examination by a healthcare professional.
  • Imaging studies, such as MRI or fistulography, may be used to visualize the fistula tract.
  • Fistulotomy: Surgical procedure to open and drain the fistula tract.
  • Seton Placement: A seton (a thread-like material) may be placed in the fistula tract to promote drainage and prevent closure.
  • Fistulectomy: Surgical removal of the fistula tract.
  • Fibrin Glue Injection: In some cases, fibrin glue may be injected into the fistula to seal it.
  • Regular follow-up visits are essential to monitor healing and address any complications.
  • Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection.

Complications: Recurrence of abscess or fistula. Incontinence or changes in bowel habits in complex cases.

Conclusion: Perianal abscess and fistula in ano are conditions that require prompt medical attention. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial for effective management and preventing complications. Individuals experiencing symptoms should seek evaluation by a healthcare professional for personalized care and treatment planning.
